The optimal racing line, explained

The optimal racing line is the path that lets you carry the most speed where it matters most: onto the straight after a corner. In practice that means braking in a straight line, turning in relatively late, clipping a late apex, and unwinding the wheel early so you can be at full throttle before you reach the exit kerb. You give up a little entry speed to gain exit speed — and exit speed is multiplied down the whole straight that follows.

The four phases of a corner

Every corner breaks into the same four reference points. Get them in the right place and the fast line falls out naturally; get them wrong and you fight the car all the way through.

  • Braking point — where you brake, ideally in a straight line before you turn.
  • Turn-in point — where you start to steer. Later than instinct tells you.
  • Apex (or clipping point) — the point closest to the inside of the corner.
  • Exit point — where the car naturally arrives back at the outside edge, hopefully at full throttle.

Why "slow in, fast out" beats "fast in"

The straight after a corner is longer than the corner itself, and speed on a straight compounds: if you get on the throttle a tenth earlier, you keep that gain the entire length of the following straight. Speed carried into a corner, by contrast, is quickly scrubbed off.

So the fastest line is not the one that feels fastest at turn-in. It is the one that lets you unwind the steering and accelerate earliest. That almost always means sacrificing a little entry speed for a better, straighter exit.

Early apex vs late apex

Where you place the apex decides everything downstream. An early apex — diving for the inside right at turn-in — looks logical, but your line then opens toward the outside on exit, forcing you to lift off exactly when you want to be flat out. A late apex keeps entry straighter, points the car toward the exit sooner, and lets you feed in throttle early with grip to spare.

Late apex: a later turn-in keeps entry straighter and points the car at the exit early — so you unwind the wheel and go to full throttle before the exit kerb, carrying speed all the way down the straight.

Early apex: diving to the inside at turn-in feels quick, but the line opens toward the outside on exit — the corner runs out, and you have to lift off (or run wide) exactly when you want to accelerate.

Look where you want to go

The single most common beginner mistake is looking only a few metres ahead, which makes everything happen too fast to react to. Always look one phase ahead: at the braking point, look to the apex; at the apex, look to the exit; at the exit, spot the next corner. Your hands follow your eyes.

Corners are not all the same

A late apex is the safe default, but corner type matters: a slow hairpin rewards a very late apex and a wide entry; a fast sweeper is about a smooth, single arc that never scrubs speed; a chicane is a compromise line that sacrifices the first apex to be fast out of the second. The reference points stay the same — only their placement changes.
